HISTORY
Founded in 1982 by eleven charter member congregations, H.E.L.P. has grown to include sixty plus congregations in the City of Hampton and Newport News.
H.E.L.P. is a faith-based organization supported by member congregations, schools, businesses, civic clubs and organizations in conjunction with the area cities. Together it has made great strides in providing emergency shelter, transitional housing, a winter shelter program, food, financial assistance to those in need, life skill training and job placement for the homeless, and free healthcare to those without medical coverage.
Over the years, H.E.L.P. has grown dramatically both in the number of volunteers and people it serves in various ministries. Together we have made a difference in literally thousands of lives. Thus we have made our community a better place for all citizens.

H.E.L.P. is a non-profit organization that ministers to the dignity and needs of the people in the Hampton Roads Community by providing assistance in the areas of housing, food, assistance, and health and dental care.
- We maintain the H.E.L.P. House Family Center, a shelter for homeless families, as well as Transitional Housing for families who graduate from H.E.L.P. House and "A Night's Welcome" winter emergency shelters.
- Our Financial Assistance Program helps families avoid homelessness in times of critical financial distress and makes referrals to other agencies to further assist in homelessness prevention.
- Our food pantry is located at Hampton Department of Social Services.
- Our medical and dental services are provided to individuals with no medical coverage that fall at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines at the H.E.L.P. Free Clinic. Volunteer doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, other health care professionals, and non-medical volunteers make up the staff.

Call in Referral. A service offered by the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula. United Way First Call acts as a link between what you may need and what is available in the community. United Way also has information about support groups, community and agency services and general information to answer your questions. This service is for Peninsula residents (Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and York County).

Yes! We'll provide you a letter with the number of volunteer hours you provided upon your request.
- Food Pantry: Available to tide people over in an emergency or to fill the gap before they can begin to receive food from long-term programs such as food stamps. Families
get groceries according to the number of people in the family.
- To access the pantry, people must see a social services intake worker who verifies need and distributes food. Hampton Social Services may be contacted at (757) 727-1800.
- If you do not have a caseworker, Hampton Human Services will provide you with food from the H.E.L.P. Food Pantry between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., and 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. If you already have a caseworker you will need to make an appointment with them.
- Bag Lunch Program: Volunteer churches distribute bag lunches at Noon every Saturday at four different locations in the City of Hampton. Over 400 bag lunches are given out each weekend.

- Financial Assistance: Our Mission is to avoid homelessness by assisting with utility bills. Referrals are taken from member congregations or area social service agencies. Please call 850-9600 for more information.
- Family Shelter: We provide shelter to homeless families with children. The shelter can accommodate up to five families at one time. Any person requesting shelter information must first contact First Call United Way at (757) 594-4636.
- Transitional Housing: We own two duplexes that provide four units of housing for homeless families with children in transition between the family shelter and permanent housing.
- A Night's Welcome: A 22-week sheltering program for the homeless sponsored by participating congregations. Guests are offered a meal, mat and blanket to sleep on, and breakfast. Volunteers from host congregations provide food and hospitality. Check our Events & News webpage for the schedule.
- The Free Clinic: Offers free medical services to the medically under served and uninsured adults that meet eligibility requirements. The clinic is staffed by professional and lay volunteers. Please view the "Free Clinic Info" page.
- Dental Clinic: Dental care is offered to clients that have no dental insurance and meet eligibility requirements. The H.E.L.P. Dental Clinic is part of the Regional Dental Program funded by Bernadine Franciscan Sisters Foundation and a Community Impact Grant through United Way of the Peninsula. Volunteers are the backbone of the H.E.L.P. Individuals are needed in all areas to serve the uninsured and medically under served on the Peninsula. Many volunteers are needed in "behind the scenes" jobs, as well as working with clinic patients. We utilize volunteer workers with medical as well as non-medical skills. If you have no medical insurance, please call us at (757) 723-0648 to make an appointment for eligibility screening. The following lists our eligibility requirements. You may also download a copy of our Eligibility Requirements Checklist or pick-up a list at our office, 317 Rip Rap Road. (Where is our office?)
- Patient must not have any insurance to include MEDICARE, MEDICAID, dental, or private or veteran’s insurance.
- There is a $10.00 initial screening fee to be paid upon qualification. Patients will be re-screened every six months. It is the responsibility of the patient to make sure they call for a re-screening appointment.
- Valid Virginia drivers license or Virginia ID. Our services are for Virginia residents living within the close proximity of the clinic.
- Social Security cards for every member filed on current year tax form.
- Income for the person applying for services, and or every person on current year tax form. This includes pay stubs, records of tips, bonuses, commission, etc. must submit four (4) most consecutive pay stubs.
- Applicants are required to bring a current year 1040 form along with their W–2. If you are self employed you will need a 1040 with the Schedule C. If you did not file taxes you are required to fill out a 4506-T form stating you did not file.
- Statement of any financial assistance or support for household to include supplemental security income, social security, unemployment compensation, pensions, settlements, Transition Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplimental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), child support, disability, retirement, alimony/ divorce decree, financial aid awards for college students. A bank statement or a letter from Social Security. All documents must be current.
- A W-6 form is required if you are unemployed. You may get this form at the Virginia Employment Commission (VEC), 600 Butler Farm Road in Hampton, Virginia. (Where is the VEC office?)
- If you have no income all applicants are required to obtain a household support letter (available at the clinic). This form must be notarized. Applicants must return this document to the clinic and a current utility bill with the name and address of the person providing the support.
New patients may return these documents (all of the documents) to the main office Monday and Tuesday between 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Documents will not be accepted after 1:00 p.m. documents will not be accepted on Wednesday, Thursday or Fridays. Re-screening appointments are made on each Thursday of the month and the re-screening fee is to be paid at the time of the appointment.
There is a $ 20.00 administrative fee for each dental visit. This fee must be pre-paid.

This is a free web-based service, new to our local area. It was designed for professionals who want to have their highly professional skills matched with the volunteer needs of local non-profit agencies which could utilize and benefit from their high skill levels, special talents and expertise. Non-profit agencies will have the opportunity to post their need for volunteers with professional expertise, to accomplish fundraising, operational, marketing, managerial and other tasks.
